2023 Biology Photo/Art Contest

The Biology department invited members of the community to submit photos and artwork for its second annual photo contest to highlight biologists in action. We received a variety of submissions and thank everyone for their submitted photography and artwork. We recently announced the winners of our second annual Biology Photo/Art Contest.

Pamira Yanar, student: Came across this decaying corpse while walking around Sardis Ancient City in Manisa, Turkey.
London Nemmers, student: Namibian nematode or microscopic worm, under anhydrobiosis. Image taken with a scanning electron microscope illustrating how it coils and loses most of its body water, but retains its structure.
Omar Quintero, faculty: "Especie Invasiva." Green iguana are invasive to Puerto Rico, and here are two sunning themselves on the walls of Castillo San Felipe del Morro, in old San Juan. "El Morro" as it is also known was built by the Spanish colonizers in the mid 1500s to protect the harbor.
Ansleigh Gunter, student: Taken during my study abroad at Mount Field National Park in Tasmania, a small island of Australia. This is a waterfall in a temperate rainforest, which runs faster during La Nina years of the ENSO cycle, providing habitat and waterfall for hundreds of different species, including forest wallabies and ancient varieties of ferns. This photo was taken on a 35 millimeter film camera and developed by Super 8 Film Development in Newtown, Sydney, Australia.

Nolan Sykes, student: A leaf cutter ant crossing a log in the Braulio Carrillo National Park in Heredia, Costa Rica.
William Heinle, student: The Bat Cave yonahlossee Salamander (Plethodon yonahlossee) was once a distinct species, the crevice salamander (Plethodon longicrus), but is now considered a population of yonahlossee salamanders. After squeezing sideways deep into a claustrophobic crevice in a canyon wall, this salamander was photographed on an excursion from the Southeast Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation 2023 Annual Conference.
Annie Johnson, student: A swarm of bees at the University of Richmond hives.
Joshua Pandian, student: ISO 100 film. Darkroom Print Settings: f/11, 15s exposure time, contrast filter 3. Formation of a frond from a dwarf tree fern (Blechnum gibbum) at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. I wanted this image to encapsulate the complexity and order of nature, and remind others of what drives us to study life and its many intricacies.
Maya Allione, student: This is a Wooly Bear Caterpillar, which is the larval form of the Isabella Tiger Moth. This moment was captured near Charlottesville during a crisp October hike.
Corrie Cooper, student: Taken during the lab section of Behavioral Neuroscience. This is a microscopic image of a brain slice taken from the hippocampus of a mouse. The neurons in the hippocampus were stained using the Golgi-Cox method and were counter stained with Cresyl Violet.
Kathryn Reda, student: This is a photo I took on a trip to Yellowstone. After a fresh snowfall, wild buffalo filled the meadow and brushed away snow to graze on buried grasses.
Priscilla Erickson, faculty: This lizard was photographed in the mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico. I love how despite it being neon green and blue it blends into its surrounding. I also love the contrast of ferns and cacti growing together in the same place.
Emma Spencer, student: My favorite organism, Buddie, in motion.
Elizabeth Forrey, student: A photo of a Channel Island fox wearing a GPS collar looking through the bars of a trap at me, while I was assisting on the annual Channel Island fox population monitoring project. This fox's name is Gouda.
Jillian Yates, student: Tulips outside of Boatwright Memorial Library.
Michael Kyle, student: Two hippos fighting on the Kazinga channel in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda. The Kazinga channel has one of the highest concentrations of hippos in the world.
Lauren Yim, student: Beautiful leopard on the move in South Africa.
Jake Mantegna, student: This is a particularly beautiful Rainbow Trout i that I caught last week out in Western Virginia.
Isabel Goodin, student: This is a rock stack created by the James River.
Nicky Ramirez Veliz, student: This is a capture of e.coli colonies and biofilm after insertion of wildtype GFP (green) and mutant GFP (red) genes generated in Synthetic Biology class.
