2024 Photo/Art Contest

Our 3^rd annual biology photo/artwork contest included 21 submissions from faculty, staff and students, representing a wide range of images and artwork.

Winning photos/artwork are hanging on our Gallery Wall in Gottwald, in the hallway around off the Atrium near the Biology and Chemistry office in B100.

2024 PHOTO/ART CONTEST SUBMISSIONS

Jillian Yates, student. I took this photo during my Global EFL Internship in Indonesia in the summer of 2023. Some of the faculty members at the school I was at took us to feed peanuts to these monkeys. They were so curious and very friendly.
Pamira Yanar, student. Istanbul: Survival of the Fittest. [People often feed seagulls of the Istanbul with simit (bagel) pieces, especially as they are taking the ferry to cross the Bosphorus. Here, two seagulls are both going for a piece of simit thrown by a passenger as we are crossing from Europe to Asia on the ferry.)

Emily Lekas, student. Field Work: A biology student crosses a desert stream in Tucson, Arizona during the Desert Ecology class field trip to remove invasive buffelgrass (Cenchrus ciliaris).

Emily Spear, student. This image of HeLA cell mitochondria was taken by Emily Spear ('26) on 1/26/2024 at the University of Richmond. This image was taken using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) with HT Voltage set at 80kV and a magnification of X25k. The box in the lower right corner scales the image at 200.0nm. This image was taken for research done for Dr. Omar Quintero's Lab - UR Department of Biology. Image details are shown at the bottom and may be disregarded for viewing purposes.
Ansleigh Gunter, student. This artwork is a linocut print, made by carving out a block of linoleum and inking it with oil-based ink. The print shows a diverse tide pool ecosystem, full of crabs, mollusks, corals, and other invertebrates and fauna.
Lee Parker, staff. Birds flying over Huguenot bridge before sunrise.
David Vinson, staff. I took this photo of a Great Blue Heron this March on the James River near Belle Isle.
Rose Agarwala, student. While studying abroad in Kenya we got to experience the Masai Mara safari where this picture was taken.
Chloe Ngo, student. Joshua Trees (Yucca brevifolia) in Joshua Tree natural park. These beautiful yuccas are one keystone species within the Mojave desert.
Priscilla Erickson, faculty. I originally thought I was taking a photo of a small bee when I noticed it was actually being eaten by a very well-camouflaged crab spider!
Dominique Pham, alum. The inflorescence of invasive wavyleaf basketgrass (Oplismenus undulatifolius). Like many grasses, wavyleaf basketgrass is wind pollinated and do not need petals as an extravagant display to attract pollinators. Even so, these flowers are still captivating. Here is an up-close glimpse of beauty that also carries the potential danger of the spread of invasive plants.
