2026 Photo/Art Contest

Our 5th annual biology photo/artwork contest included 13 submissions from faculty, staff and students, representing a wide range of images and artwork. We awarded one first place and two honorable mention winners.

Winning photos/artwork will be hung by early June on our Gallery Wall in Gottwald, in the hallway around off the Atrium near the Biology and Chemistry office in B100.

2026 PHOTO/ART CONTEST SUBMISSIONS

Daniel Garay, student: This photograph, captured in Nicaragua, features a white-winged dove (Zenaida asiatica) resting along a concrete wall. What immediately draws the eye is the bird's vivid red iris ringed by the cobalt-blue skin, a reminder that some of nature's most striking adaptations belong not to the rare or exotic but to the creatures living quietly alongside us every day.

Amala Thomas, staff: Pacific purple sea urchin underwater at Laguna Beach.
Yifei Qi, student: Raccoon in a tree by the Westhampton lake.
Morgan Elliott, student: This was taken in the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. This lounging male lion is licking his lips, showing his powerful teeth and scars that show several years of survival in the wild.
Gloria Kroodsma, student: A mother Southern Royal Albatross feeding her chick. Taken during a field trip to the Royal Albatross Centre in Dunedin, New Zealand with Dr. Grayson's biodiversity course.
Jacob Bennett: Up close with a spiny-tailed iguana in the forests of Costa Rica
Marianne Packer, student: The flowing water of Hooker River from the famous Hooker Valley Track in Aoraki/Mount Cook, New Zealand. Taken on a small digital camera while studying abroad in New Zealand, it captures how blue the water is, and the vibrant green native alpine lichen.
Anne Kinghorn, student: This is a photo depicting a goose on the University of Richmond lake. I really enjoy this photo because of how peaceful and still the goose looks while the water moves behind it. This image also showcases the properties of water, how it can both be moving in the background and still in the foreground, helping us to see the reflection of the goose body.
Connor Beasley, student: Photo of the Dismal Swamp Canal.
Emily Boone, staff: This is a deer selfie captured during an early morning fog in January on one of the trail cameras that I placed at the University's Pagebrook Rd property for my Biology 199 lab.
