2024 Biology Photo/Art Contest

ACCEPTING ENTRIES March 11-April 5, 2024

The Department of Biology invites members of our community (broadly-defined) to share photos of biologists in action, interesting micrographs, or Biology-themed works of art for our inaugural Photo/Art contest.

The best entries will be selected for framing and mounting on our new Biology gallery wall on the first floor of Gottwald.  The top three entries will be awarded prizes!

Contest Rules

  1. All students, international students, exchange students, alumni, faculty, and staff (“entrants”) may participate in the contest. Professional photographers or artists are not allowed to enter.
  2. Entrants must be the person that took the photo or created the artwork (The entrant cannot be the subject of a photo, unless it’s a selfie).
  3. Entries should have relevance and interest to the field of Biology.
  4. A maximum of one (1) photo or work of art may be submitted per entrant.
  5. Nonwinning entries from prior years are encouraged to resubmit.
  6. Entries become the property of the University of Richmond and may be edited and reproduced for publication in electronic or print form.
  7. Photos may be color, black and white, and/or sepia and should be submitted as high-resolution digital files.
  8. Works of art will be evaluated in photo form, but the expectation is that the originals will be displayed if selected. Works of art should be two dimensional and no bigger than 24” x 24.”
  9. Late entries will not be accepted.

Photo/Art Submission Criteria

Submit high-resolution, digital photos (JPEG preferred) or photo of your work of art by uploading a photo online at insert link.

Photos taken on cameras with at least 4 megapixels will usually yield a high- resolution photo suitable for this contest, provided the camera is capturing the image at its highest resolution setting. Most smartphones capture photos in high resolution, too. Ideally, the largest dimension of your photo—either vertical or horizontal—should be 2000 pixels or greater. Photos with more pixels are preferred.

Winner Selection and Prizes

The faculty and staff members of the Biology Department Awards committee will be selecting winners.

Winning entrants will receive prizes and their photograph or work of art may be displayed in Gottwald, included in future University publications, and/or showcased on University websites.

Winners will be announced at the Biology Department end of year banquet on Monday, April 22, 12-1pm, Gottwald Atrium.
