Catalogue of Trees and Shrubs at Richmond

In 2001, the Department of Biology began a project to fully document the woody species that grow on the University of Richmond campus. The project, led by Tihomir Kostadinov '02 and professor W. John Hayden, created an online catalogue of photographs and descriptions, organized by family name, Genus name and common name. The project is still far from complete. At this point, it focuses on woody dicot species, including trees, shrubs and lianas. Conifers have not been included at this phase.

There are many opportunities for students to help with this project, from finding, documenting and identifying plants to gathering images of plants in the early and late autumnal and winter stages (current photos document only spring and summer stages of development) to dissecting microscopy of buds and flowers. Students who are interested in the project should contact Dr. John Hayden for more information.
